What We Do

Queen's Cottage Foundation

Strategic Objective 2

To improve the socio-economic well-being of widows, orphans and other vulnerable children, youth and women.

We believe that widows, orphans, girls affected by female genital mutilation and other vulnerable women and youth have agency to lead their own escape and change from the difficult situations they face to better lives and well-being.  For this reason, we work with these groups to increase their capacities to lead their own development through:

  • Working with them to identify viable projects that are supported to enable establishment of income streams that benefit them.  Interventions include poultry and livestock projects, farming high value crops, and apiary.
  • Working in collectives or SACCOs are encouraged to increase affordability of inputs and access to market. Establish skilling opportunities and/ or vocational training opportunities both in established settings, and in the communities, where the learners are later supported with startup capital to establish small enterprises that generate income.  Where possible, insurance covers will be provided for these ventures.

For the above interventions, the target groups are provided with business management acumen.
While working to equip individuals and families to be economically independent, basic needs of girls affected by female genital mutilation, orphans and widows will be met, including access to education through bursaries, sponsors and other opportunities.
